The SXU community celebrated Homecoming 2012 with a fun-filled week of events from September 25 to September 30 at its Chicago campus.
Cougars on Parade Recap
New to this year's celebration was the "Cougars on Parade" contest. Mirroring Chicago's famous "Cows on Parade," SXU departments and organizations, in the weeks prior to Homecoming, "adopted" and decorated cougar statues in various themes. The finished products were showcased on the SXU website allowing viewers to vote on their "favorite." More than 72,500 votes were cast, with the Office of Records and Advising's horror movie-themed "Scaredy Cat" taking first place. This campus-wide endeavor culminated prior to the Homecoming game on September 29 as the marching band, cheerleaders, and Paw Prints dance team escorted the finished statues across campus in the office March of the Cougars.
Kick-Off at Gilhooley's Recap
On September 25, SXU staff and faculty came together to celebrate Homecoming week at Gilhooley's Grande Saloon. Enjoying beverages and the new menu offerings colleagues shared in the spirit of fellowship at this kick-off to Homecoming.
Brown Bag Project Recap
SXU's Service Through Action Team (S.T.A.T.) -- a team of SXU alumni and students who work together on community focused service projects -- gathered nearly 70 students and alumni on September 26 to make more than 500 lunches for neighbors in need, such as Port Ministries, Southwest Suburban PADS and P.R.I.D.E. alternative schools. During this project, when volunteers heard that the goal of 500 lunches may not be possible as there were only enough juice boxes to make 300 lunches, they immediately took action by purchasing more than 200 additional juice bottles with their meal cards. S.T.A.T. has made over 5,000 lunches for shelters during the past three years.
Alumni Links Golf Outing Recap
Alumni Links, new to Homecoming this year, was a family-friendly event offering the opportunity to hit the greens with a 9-hole golf scramble, or for the less adventurous mini-golf, bocce ball, and bean bags. The evening concluded with Alumni and friends comparing their scores over a special barbeque dinner.
Cougar 5K Run/Walk Recap
The 12th Annual Cougar 5K Run/Walk welcomed nearly 1,000 people September 29. After the race, alumni, parents and friends joined President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D. in the All-Alumni Reunion tent prior to the Homecoming football game. This event doubles as a fun-raiser and a fund-raiser with a portion of the proceeds designated to support the Student Scholarship Fund and the Cougar Club.
