Below you will find a sample schedule of the two-day program for parents and family members. Summer 2014's official schedule will be posted in April 2014.

Parent Orientation – Day 1

 Welcome to Parent Orientation at Saint Xavier University. We're glad you're here and look forward to providing you with valuable information about your student's upcoming time at SXU!

Parent Check-In and Breakfast 

Begin the day with the Parent Orientation check-in, enjoy a light breakfast and receive your program materials. Staff will be available to welcome you and answer any questions.

Welcome to SXU 

Meet members of the University leadership, staff and Orientation Leaders at this official kickoff to your summer visit!

The Mercy Tradition

What makes SXU unique? During this session you learn about what it means for your student to be attending a Mercy institution of higher education and more about the core values of respect, excellence, compassion, service, hospitality, integrity, diversity and learning for life.

The Basics

Just like it sounds- this session will help you learn about how your student can study, eat, work, be healthy and be safe! Come with your questions about the Cougar Card, PNC bank accounts, the Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library, Chartwells Dining Service, Student Employment, Health Insurance and Public Safety.


Re-energize with good food and conversation. You'll also have the opportunity to meet SXU staff members who will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Life Inside the Classroom

See what it's like to take a class at SXU! You will choose from various topics and get a chance to meet a faculty member who will give you a peek inside the classroom and explain SXU's academic expectations of your student.

Student Financial Services

Meet representatives from the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of the Bursar who will provide tips and strategies to help you understand your rights and responsibilities concerning financial aid eligibility and payment obligations. This session is for students and parents.

Technology Resources

Parents will learn more about technology resources on campus.

Academic Expectations at SXU

Learn about academic expectations for your student – including information about general education requirements, advising and policies that affect you and your student. This session is for students and parents.

Parent Reception

Join Saint Xavier University's leadership, the vice presidents, deans, faculty and staff for an informal reception; mix and mingle, ask questions and experience SXU hospitality at its best.

The First-Year Experience

All first-year students participate in a number of programs designed to welcome, acclimate, engage and support them. During this session you will learn about First Day for First-Years, Welcome Week, Transitions, the Common Reading Experience and other support services, including the Learning Center and disability Services, that are available to your student throughout their first academic year and beyond.

Life Outside the Classroom 

Learn about ways your student can get involved on campus and the different resources available to them to do so. Representatives from the Health Center, Shannon Athletic Center, Counseling Center, Career Services, Residence Life, Study Abroad, Student Support Program, and Campus Life will be present.


Enjoy a delicious dinner with fellow parents, faculty and staff before the evening's activities. Learn about how college affects students and what you might expect as you make the transition to being the parent of a college student. Hear from SXU administrators who are parents of college students and meet parents of current and past SXU students.

FOCUS Theatre

Don't miss this exceptional performance! Our talented team of Orientation Leaders will introduce a wide variety of campus issues through unique skits and performances.

Continental Breakfast

Start the day off right with a continental breakfast.

GPS – Guide to Personal Success

Join representatives from academic and student services departments across campus who will be on hand to answer any questions you might have and provide useful information that will you're your student navigate the resources available here at SXU.

A Day in the Life

Enjoy this opportunity to meet some of our current Orientation Leaders and learn about student life at SXU. Feel free to ask questions.

SXU Parenthood

Learn about opportunities for involvement as an SXU Parent. Hosted by Alumni and Parent Relations.

Policies and Safety at SXU

Have you talked with your son or daughter about making good decisions and being safe on campus? This session includes an overview of the Student Code of Conduct as well as common sense tips for managing daily life on campus. Presented by the Office of the Dean of Students and the Department of Public Safety.


Join us for one more meal in O'Malley Quad!

Letting Go

Student Affairs staff will be on hand to share tips and resources and to help you navigate your role in your student's life while still supporting their independence. Learn how to help your student overcome obstacles, changes in communication and how to distinguish real problems from normal adjustment issues.

Discover SXU

Participate in a parents' tour of campus, important offices and residence halls at the Chicago campus or take time for personal business.
