Art and Design
Roy W. Clough Scholarship
The Roy W. Clough Scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Sister Joy Clough, R.S.M., '65, who established the endowed scholarship to honor the memory of her father. The scholarship will assist a Saint Xavier University student in the art and design department based on the following criteria: the student must be a declared art and design major on the graphic design track, must maintain a 2.5 overall GPA, demonstrate financial need, and must submit a letter on why he/she chose to major in graphic design and what he/she intends to do with the degree. This scholarship is available to be renewed once with the submission of a new application.
The Max Goldenberg Scholarship for Art and Design was established by the Max Goldenberg Foundation in 2009 and will assist a student studying in the Department of Art and Design. This scholarship will be awarded annually.
This scholarship honors Sister Mary Paul Keefe, R.S.M., former director of the Art Department at Saint Xavier University for more than 40 years. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to students enrolled in the Art Department.
Edwin J. and Mildred B. Keene Scholarship in Art and Music
(Rotates between the Art and Design and Music Departments.)
The Edwin J. and Mildred B. Keene Scholarship in Art and Music was established by Dr. Carol A. Keene ’61 in honor of her parents. In the Department of Art and Design, the Keene Scholarship will be awarded to an entering freshman with a minimum overall high school GPA of 2.5/4.0 or transfer student with no more than 20 hours of transfer credit. This will be granted based upon a portfolio (six to eight pieces in any medium) reviewed by faculty in the Art Department, a letter of application stating the student’s interests in and goals for art, recommendations by two high school teachers (one of whom teaches in the arts), and/or participation in invitational shows that are juried by high school instructors. This scholarship is renewable as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA in art and design classes and a cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0.
The Sister Margaret Grant, CSJ Memorial Award is presented to a graduating senior who has been accepted by a medical or law school, and who has demonstrated superior academic achievement and significant interactional skills in the classroom, extracurricular activities, civic involvement or employment. This award was established through the generosity of James A. Klein, MD, LLD, ’75.
A generous gift from the estate of Margaret "Kay" Halper, '50, will establish the Halper Endowed Scholarship in Biology. Kay Halper, a longtime resident of the Pittsburgh area who, with her husband Donald, raised seven children, died in late 2006 after a long illness. According to Donald, Kay was a very proud SXU alumna who appreciated the education she received from the Sisters of Mercy and the lifelong friendships she formed with her classmates. The Halper Endowment will provide for an annual scholarship award to a talented student majoring in biology at Saint Xavier University.
This award is given each year to a graduating biology major who has not only excelled in the classroom, but distinguished him/herself as a leader by peers and department faculty. Zack Zaibak, D.D.S., '81, generously funds this award each year.
Margaret E. Yates, a former SXU chemistry faculty member, and her husband graciously established two scholarships at the University. Monetary awards are presented to top ranking students in first year chemistry classes. One award is the Dr. K. Lucille McCluskey Chemistry Award for a student who earns the highest composite grade in Chemistry 111 and Chemistry 112. The second award is the Margaret E. Yates Chemistry Award for a student who earns the highest composite grade in Chemistry 251 and Chemistry 252. Both courses must be taken at Saint Xavier University.
Richard J. Potts '83 Scholarship
Established from the generosity of Ms. Doris R. Potts, the Richard J. Potts, '83, Scholarship in Communication will benefit students in the department in perpetuity. Ms. Potts honored her son's memory with this scholarship because of his love for Saint Xavier and the excellent education he was provided while he attended the University. If it was not for the assistance of scholarships, Richard would have been unable to attend Saint Xavier. This generous gift will ensure students receive the same opportunity in the future.
The JoAnne Fleming Warner Scholarship is for students enrolled in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior speech-language pathology major with a GPA of 3.2 or higher. The candidate must also be active in the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association.
Sylvia M. Schlunk Award
The Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science are accepting applications for the twentieth annual Sylvia M. Schlunk Award to be awarded to a student of one of these departments who has demonstrated interest and ability in mathematics and/or computer science. The $1,000 award is given annually and can be applied toward tuition, fees, room and board, or living expenses. The award may also be used as reimbursement of tuition for a summer course.

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time junior or senior English major with a minimum GPA of 3.5. A written essay is required. This scholarship was established through the generosity of Mrs. Janice H. Deegan, '69, and contributions made from former students and friends of Tom Deegan.
The Daniel B. Fleming '93 Memorial Award is a scholarship for English students who are pursuing teaching careers. This scholarship helps students defray costs during their (unpaid) teaching practicum. It is open to English majors, specifically those majors pursuing secondary certification in order to obtain a teaching position. This scholarship was established through the generosity of Mrs. Mary Fleming, '04.
The Joan Guilfoyle Scholarship is an annual award that is given to a student majoring in foreign language studies. A strong preference will be given to a student with an interest in French language and culture. Contributions from Mrs. Joan Guilfoyle, '39, friends and family fund this scholarship.
The Sister Dorothy Marie Peschon Scholarship is an annual award that is given to a student majoring in one of the University's foreign language study programs.
The Edwin J. and Mildred B. Keene Mathematics Scholarship was established by Dr. Carol A. Keene, '61, in honor of her parents. This scholarship will be awarded to a student whose declared major is mathematics or mathematics education. The applicant must also maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all mathematics or mathematics education classes as well as in all other University classes.
The Sylvia Schlunk, '77, Award was established in memory of Sylvia Schlunk, '77, alumna and instructor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. This award will be given annually to a junior or senior level student whose declared major is mathematics and who has completed a minimum of 20 credit hours of course work.
This scholarship may be applied for after the first semester of study in applied music at Saint Xavier. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in applied music courses and a 3.0 GPA in all music courses while maintaining an overall 2.0 GPA. The applicant must also be actively involved and demonstrate positive leadership in music department activities.

The Edwin J. and Mildred B. Keene Scholarship in Art and Music was established by Dr. Carol A. Keene ’61 in honor of her parents. In the Department of Music, the Keene Scholarship will be awarded to an entering freshman who should have an overall high school GPA of 2.5 in a 4.0 system and who has declared music as a major. The scholarship will be awarded upon a departmental audition with the music faculty (or a tape for an out-of-state student).
The recipient will be eligible to renew the scholarship during his/her college career by maintaining a 3.0 GPA in music classes and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in a 4.0 system. If the recipient changes his/her major from music, he/she shall forfeit the scholarship.
The Daniel Lawrence Music Award is an annual award that benefits a declared music major at Saint Xavier. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and submit a written essay on why he/she wants to major in music, and what he/she intends to do with the degree. This award was established through the generosity of Mr. Otis and Mrs. Janis, '97, Lawrence.
This scholarship is available to incoming students majoring in music with a minimum GPA of 2.5 upon their admission to Saint Xavier University.
This scholarship is available to freshmen students who are declared music majors. Applicants must also demonstrate a talent for piano and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. This award was established through the generosity and vision of the late-Sister Mary Simeon O'Donohue, '52, in memory of her parents. Additional donors to the scholarship fund are the friends and family of Sinon and Catherine O'Donohue.
The Department of Philosophy benefited from another generous gift from Carol A. Keene, '61. The Carol A. Keene '61 Philosophy Scholarship will be awarded annually to a sophomore who has submitted a proposal for research to be conducted junior and senior year. Throughout her career, Dr. Keene has demonstrated her dedication to scholarship and the liberal arts at Saint Xavier. She received her undergraduate degree in philosophy from Saint Xavier College. The Edwin J. Keene Math Scholarship and the Mildred B. Keene Art and Music Scholarship were both created in honor of her parents several years ago.
The John Ziegler Memorial Fund was established by Kathleen Black Hurley, in honor of her late husband, John J. Ziegler, faculty emeritus at Saint Xavier University; this award provides funding for a lecture every other year by a prominent philosophy scholar.
Thanks to the generosity of Sister Joy Clough, R.S.M., '65, this endowed scholarship has been established to honor the memory of her mother. The scholarship will assist a Saint Xavier University student in the religious studies department based on the following criteria: the student must be a declared religious studies major, must be female, must maintain a 2.5 overall GPA, demonstrate financial need and must submit a letter on why she chose to major in religious studies and what she intends to do with the degree. This scholarship is available to be renewed once with the submission of a new application.
This award was established by Dr. Marilyn F. Collins in tribute to her parents. The fund provides for an occasional award to a student in the women and gender studies program.
