Center for Creating Engaged Learning Environments
The Center for Creating Engaged Learning Environments (CELE) was the Title III grant project at Saint Xavier University, Title III Strengthening Institutions Part A. This program helps eligible institutions of higher education, such as SXU, to become self sufficient and expand their capacity to serve low-income students by providing funds to improve and strengthen the academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability of eligible institutions. The grant began in October 2008 and ended in September 2013.
Though housed in the Office of Academic Affairs, some the grant activities and staff were located in Student Affairs and Instructional Resources and Technology. The total amount of support offered by the grant was $1.9 million.
Through broad-based strategic planning, SXU stakeholders identified a multi-faceted project to create, evaluate and continue to build upon the envisioned engaged learning community:
- Meaningful first-year academic experiences;
- Effective student intervention strategies;
- Community-based and collaborative learning experiences;
- Technology-rich learning opportunities; and
- Embedded assessment for continuous project improvement.
Faculty development focused on SXU’s greatest needs was infused throughout the project design.
The result of this Title III project will be significantly increased retention and graduation -- for all students and for the at-risk students depending upon SXU in greater numbers than ever before in our history. Cost-effective project design and a commitment to sound institutionalization strategies will help insure the long-term benefit of the Title III initiative on the University and on the students we have pledged to serve.
The Center for Creating Engaged Learning Environments at Saint Xavier University was federally funded by a United States Department of Education Title III: Strengthening Institutions grant.
