The elementary education program prepares candidates to teach children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Completion of the program leads to a bachelor of science degree and prepares candidates to obtain an Illinois Type 03 certificate and eligibility to apply for middle school endorsements. The program consists of general education, area of concentration and professional education courses that address requirements for graduation and the state of Illinois requirements for certification.
Requirements for Degree
Candidates in the elementary program should major in education and must complete the following requirements:
- complete a minimum of 36 credit hours in education
- complete a minimum of 18 credit hours in an approved subject area concentration, 9 of which must be taken at the 200 level or beyond at a 4-year institution
- complete all University core requirements
Middle Grade Endorsement
The middle grade endorsement is available for candidates completing certification in either elementary or secondary education. Information about specific requirements can be obtained from the director of teacher education.
