Endorsement Policy

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has granted SXU the authority to entitle initial certification candidates and certified teachers for endorsements, either at the time of, or subsequent to, certification, based on SXU endorsement requirements. Teacher certificates can be endorsed with the subject and grade levels a teacher is certified to teach. The Office of Teacher Education and Certification (OTEC) in the School of Education at Saint Xavier University has established procedures for assisting our teacher education candidates, certified alumni, and other certified teachers in fulfilling requirements for adding endorsements to their teacher certificates

Fees:

• Currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate education majors:
  • Transcript review/processing fee to SXU for 1st endorsement-no charge
  • Transcript review/processing fee for additional endorsements-$10/each
  • Fee to ISBE when each endorsement is awarded at the time of certification – no fee
• Certified teachers certified by entitlement thrrough SXU:
  • Transcript review/processing fee to SXU for 1st endorsement-$10
  • Transcript review/processing fee for each additional endorsement-$20
  • Fee to ISBE when each endorsement is awarded- $50
• Certified teachers not certified through SXU:
  • Transcript review/processing fee to SXU for each endorsement-$30
  • Fee to ISBE when each endorsement is awarded-$50

Transcripts will be reviewed upon request in the order received. Only transcripts from the institution where courses were completed and on file in OTEC can be evaluated for determining deficiencies or endorsement eligibility. Coursework transferred to SXU cannot be considered without the original transcripts from the institution where the coursework was completed. OTEC has original transcripts on file for all courses completed at SXU, and for all courses completed at other institutions at the time of certification, for those certified thru SXU in Fall 2006 and after.

If you want to apply for an endorsement thru SXU, please submit the Endorsement Request Form for certified teachers (DOC) or the Endorsement Request Form for current SXU students (DOC), official transcripts not on file in OTEC, and a personal check or money order made payable to SXU according to the fee structure above, to:

The turn-around time for a transcript review is approximately 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the number of requests received. An email outlining endorsement deficiencies or eligibility will be sent to the email address listed on the Endorsement Request Form; a plan can be designed for how deficiencies can be removed at 2-year and 4-year institutions in order to qualify for the endorsement(s) thru SXU.
