SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp

Saint Xavier University was pleased to announce its Inaugural SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp, running from July 19-22, 2016.
The camp, was open to students in grades 6 through 12, provided students with the opportunity to learn from and work with an outstanding group of jazz educators who are dedicated in helping them gain their confidence and improve on their abilities as section players, improvisers and sight-readers.
The SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp was open to students of all levels of experience regardless of whether they were new to jazz or looking to expand their horizons. The camp included daily rehearsals on jazz repertoire, instrumental sectionals, improvisation master-classes, jam sessions, guest concerts and music theory workshops. Students got to showcase their talent with a final concert on the evening of Friday, July 22 in McGuire Hall on Saint Xavier University’s Chicago campus.
The SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp welcomed all instruments, including trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, string bass, guitar, vibraphone and drums.
SXU-Southside Summer Jazz Camp directors were Charles Martin, band director at Harold L. Richards High School, and Dr. Shawn Salmon, director of Jazz Studies at Saint Xavier University.
