Retroactive Credit for Spanish

Do you already have a working knowledge of the Spanish language? If so, you may be able to gain extra college credit without taking additional classes!

Students enrolling in Spanish classes can pursue retroactive credit if they place higher than the Elementary I level after taking the placement test. A maximum of 12 credit hours can be awarded upon completion with a grade of C or better, as shown in the chart below:

Student Placed In Retroactive Credit Awarded

101 - Elementary I

No retroactive credit awarded.

102 - Elementary II

3 retroactive credit hours awarded for a total of 6 credit hours.

103 - Intermediate I

6 retroactive credit hours awarded for a total of 9 credit hours.

104 - Intermediate II

9 retroactive credit hours awarded for a total of 12 credit hours.

2XX - Advanced

12 retroactive credit hours awarded for a total of 15 credit hours.

*Be aware: the course you need to take to claim retroactive credit might not be offered every academic term.*

Additional Information

A Few More Things

When registering for Spanish at SXU for the first time, you will be required to take a placement test, regardless if you plan to claim retroactive credit or not, unless you are transferring Spanish credits from a four-year academic institution. This will ensure you are placed in the correct class for your level and have a productive learning experience. Take the placement as soon as possible to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Languages Other than Spanish

If you are planning to go abroad to study French, Polish or Arabic, or if you speak any of those languages at home, it is in your best interest to take the Placement Exam so that you can be placed in the correct class during your study abroad experience. In addition, when Saint Xavier University offers classes in these languages, you will be asked to take the placement exam, just as with Spanish, and retroactive credit will be applied.
