Harvest Literacy Conference

Gathering and Sharing Innovative Strategies in Reading Instruction

Saint Xavier University School of Education is providing a one-day conference for teachers, professionals and parents who play an important role in promoting literacy.

Jerry JohnsDistinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus, Jerry Johns,Ph.D., Northern Illinois University, literacy education will give the keynote address titled "Fluency: Reader Types and Targeted Interventions." Johns has authored, edited or co-authored more than 350 books, chapters, research studies, student materials and journal articles, including the Basic Reading Inventory. He is a former president of the International Reading Association, Illinois Reading Council and the College Reading Association. He received the outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award presented by the International Reading Association, the Champion for Children Award presented by the HOSTS Corporation and the Laureate Award from the College Reading Association for life-long contributions to the field of reading. A selection of Johns' books will be available for purchase the day of the conference.

Additional speakers will focus on topics in reading with practical suggestions for the classroom teacher. See the session schedule for a complete listing of topics and speakers.

Also, there will be an opportunity during lunch to visit with Esther Hershenhorn, a local children’s author, and have a copy of her latest book signed.

Saint Xavier University is an approved provider of CPDUs through the Illinois State Board of Education. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance. SXU is an accessible site. $100 Early Bird Discount Registration Fee

$125 Registration Fee after Friday, September 25, 2009

Registration fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, instruction and workshop materials. Refunds are available through Friday, Oct. 9, 2009.

Pre-registration is required and seats are limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be no on-site registration the day of the conference.

Crisis Center of South Suburbia We are accepting monetary donations for the Crisis Center for South Suburbia to be used for purchase of selected reading materials relevant to women and staff at the center. If you are interested in donating, please visit the Crisis Center Web site www.crisisctr.org for a listing of suggested titles and how to make your donation. You will be able to purchase these references the day of the conference to make a direct donation.
