The sixth annual Bishop John R. Gorman Institute for Leadership in Catholic Education (BGI) will take place on June 22 - 25, 2009 at the Saint Xavier University (SXU) Orland Park campus.
The BGI was founded under the direction of Dean Beverly Gulley of the School of Education (SOE) to provide outstanding professional development for teachers, principals, and leadership teams of Catholic schools and is part of the comprehensive relationship between the SOE and partner schools in Chicago and other communities. Bishop John Gorman, a well known leader in Catholic education, continues to provide support and encouragement to the BGI.
The structure of the BGI is unique in that its direction and curricula emerge from a collaboration among nationally recognized leaders in Catholic education, an active Advisory Committee of local school leaders, and faculty members of SXU. This collaboration ensures a dynamic mix of research-based best practice and wisdom of experience. Since its founding in 2004, participants' reaction to the Institute has been enthusiastic, both in terms of materials and presenters, and the opportunity to network with others who share their commitment to Catholic education.
Two tracks are available: Topics for Administrators and the Teacher’s Track. CPDUs are earned in both tracks; the Teacher’s Track has the option for graduate credit. Topics for Administrators can earn ISBE Administrator Academy credit. The BGI is eligible for most Title IIA funding and some scholarship assistance is available.
The 2009 BGI boasts an impressive list of presenters. Among those featured is Marc Brackett, Ph.D., who comes to the BGI from Yale University where he is a Research Scientist in the Dept. of Psychology and Head of the Emotional Intelligence Unit in the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy, A featured speaker at NCEA and international conferences, Dr. Brackett's current research focuses on measuring emotional intelligence and its links to important life outcomes, including academic/work performance.
