Squeaky Weal Lecture Series
As a Catholic university attentive to the interplay between faith and civic life, Saint Xavier supports the Center for Religion and Public Discourse, sponsor of the Squeaky Weal Lecture Series. Launched in 2001, this lecture series promotes thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on the religious, moral and/or ethical implications of public issues, with a consistent focus on the common good.
All lectures are free and open to the public. All take place on the University's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd Street unless otherwise noted.
SXU Explores Laudato Si: Caring for Our Common Home
"Faced as we are with global environmental deterioration, I wish to address every person living on this planet," Pope Francis. We at SXU have heard the Pope's call and are committed to learning about this issue and making a difference for our world!
Our Common Home: "An Interdisciplinary Conversation on Environmental Responsibility"
This event will feature a panel presentation and discussion on Pope Francis’ Laudato si. SXU scholars will respond to the encyclical from perspectives in economics, biology and political science. These scholars will evaluate the document and critiques from within their respective fields. They will explore and engage the audience on how caring for the environment is a theological and spiritual matter. Also, the discussion will include how the various disciplines – both favorable and critical – may come together to elucidate how we are to critically evaluate this matter and how to move forward responsibly as a global community. The panel will include the following SXU faculty members: Dr. Liane Cochran-Stafira, Dr. Matthew Costello, Dr. Charles Shanabruch and Jeff Tangel.
- “I urgently appeal for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation that includes everyone.” Pope Francis, Laudato si
The environment is one of the Sisters if Mercy Critical Concerns, and it is also part of the Christian tradition to be responsible stewards of the gift of creation.
This event is co-sponsored with SXU student group Environmental Concerns Organization.
