Saint Xavier University named 2006 Champions of Character Institution
NAIA recognizes Cougar athletics for commitment to core values
Chicago (March 28, 2007) – Saint Xavier University President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., is pleased to announce that Saint Xavier is one of approximately 100 colleges and universities named to the 2006 list of Champions of Character institutions by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Winners promote and implement activities related to the association’s five core values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, according to the NAIA, which recently announced the winners from its national office in Olathe, Kan.
“Being recognized as a Champions of Character institution is a great honor for our athletics department because the NAIA strives for the same values and ideals that our coaches and staff instill in our student-athletes,” said Saint Xavier University Athletic Director Bob Hallberg. “Our student-athletes work to display key values like respect, responsibility and leadership.”
Saint Xavier athletes are involved in a number of activities that highlight the core values of the Champions of Character program, including an annual service day where student-athletes participate in activities to promote service around the local community, visiting area schools and hosting events that communicate the ideals of good sportsmanship to young children in a fun and positive environment.
“The Champions of Character program recognizes institutions that create a positive experience for students and foster environments that teach the true spirit of competition and life lessons,” said Rob Miller, NAIA director of Champions of Character initiatives. “Success follows teams that incorporate the Champions of Character philosophy. The program is designed to build great teams and great people, and we commend these institutions for their dedication and commitment to the initiative.”
