Squeaky Weal Lecture Series
As a Catholic university attentive to the interplay between faith and civic life, Saint Xavier supports the Center for Religion and Public Discourse, sponsor of the Squeaky Weal Lecture Series. Launched in 2001, this lecture series promotes thoughtful consideration and civil discourse on the religious, moral and/or ethical implications of public issues, with a consistent focus on the common good.
All lectures are free and open to the public. All take place at 6:30 p.m. on the University's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd Street.
April 14, 2016: Our Common Home: An Interdisciplinary Conversation on Environmental Responsibility
This event will feature a panel of SXU scholars who will respond to the encyclical from perspectives in economics, biology and political science. These scholars will evaluate the document and critiques from within their respective fields. We will explore how caring for the environment is a theological and spiritual matter, and how the various disciplines may come together to elucidate how we are to critically evaluate this matter and how to move forward responsibly. The panel will include SXU faculty Dr. Liane Cochran-Stafira, Dr. Matthew Costello, Dr. Charles Shanabruch and Jeff Tangel.
Selected Squeaky Weal lectures (2002-present) are available in DVD format from the Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library at Saint Xavier University. Titles may be viewed at the Library's website. DVDs may be borrowed for a week or viewed at the library.
