School of Nursing

Welcome Message from the Dean

Dean JacobsonWelcome to the Saint Xavier University School of Nursing. Founded in 1935, with over 5229 graduates, our tradition is one of ensuring excellence in nursing.  We uphold our commitment to a Culture of Intentional Caring that distinctively enhances student learning and professional development. The School of Nursing has embarked upon a strategic plan that will guide our priorities and initiatives while we continue to focus on our vision:

...we will create a learning community responsive to a changing and challenging 21st century healthcare environment. Building on faculty scholarship and clinical expertise and forming collegial relationships and strategic partnering, we will continue our tradition of preparing excellent nurses who will practice in a variety of professional roles.

The Institute of Medicine Report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (IOM, 2010) punctuates the need for nurses to practice to the full extent of their education. The recommendation to increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree from 50 to 80 percent by 2020 is one that aligns itself with the School of Nursing's mission which aims to foster scholarship, compassion and lifelong learning through innovative and creative educational models.

The School of Nursing promotes lifelong learning as integral to the professional nursing role and we encourage our nursing students to become lifelong learners -- leading not only in thought but by example. Many of our faculty members have doctorate degrees in nursing while others are engaged in the pursuit of earning a doctoral degree. Faculty are excited to incorporate their own educational experiences in the classroom, instilling the value of higher education in an undergraduate student population where sixty-five percent of students represent the first generation in their families to attend college. In addition to our faculty sharing the value of higher education with our students, our graduates also lead by example, practicing as advanced practice nurses and maintaining leadership positions nationally and internationally with deanships, executive positions in healthcare agencies and other universities.

At Saint Xavier University's School of Nursing, we are creating a learning environment that encourages our students to meet a changing and challenging healthcare environment with education as the means to make a difference in the lives of millions. As a National League for Nursing Center of Excellence, a designation held by only 17 schools in the nation, we instill within our students a belief that providing excellent care is not just an aspiration but an expectation.  We guide our students to strive for excellence with the understanding that good enough is never good enough - especially now as nurses are being called to lead in the transformation and advancement of healthcare in America.

It is definitely an exciting time to be a nurse and we are excited that you are considering our School of Nursing to help you make your goals something more that will not only change your life but the lives of so many others you will encounter in your career.

Warm Regards,

Gloria Jacobson
