First Day for First-Years
First Day for First-Years is a program designed to welcome all new first-year students to the academic community and to allow them to experience a unique SXU tradition.
Schedule of Activities for August 19, 2016
Resident Community Assembly
11 a.m. - noon
Calling all residents! We will review Residence Life staff support, available services and resources, expectations for all residents, and tips and advice for making the most of your on-campus experience! Our goal is to help residents feel welcome, comfortable, and knowledgeable about their new "home away from home!"
Check-In and New Student Induction Lineup
Welcome! Join us in the SXU Diner to receive your personalized schedule for the day’s events -- don’t forget to bring your Cougar Card! New students and their Transitions Peer Mentors (TPMs) will join the Orientation Leaders to lineup for the New Student Induction opening procession which kicks off at 1:25 p.m. Families will check in at the Shannon Center.
New Student Induction
1:45 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Join us as we officially welcome all new students into the academic community and our Catholic Mercy heritage and tradition. At the ceremony you will be greeted by President Christine M. Wiseman, J.D., the University vice presidents and deans, as well as the faculty and staff of the University. During the induction you will be presented with a Saint Xavier Medallion to symbolize your membership in the SXU community and the beginning of your academic career at Saint Xavier. Our featured speaker is Sister Helen Marie Burns, R.S.M., Ph.D., educator and Mercy scholar.
Reception and Calling of the Bell
3 - 4 p.m.
Shannon Center Recreation Gym (Reception) and Academy Bell (Calling of the Bell)
All students and their families are invited to join the faculty, staff and SXU student leaders for some light refreshments and a special welcoming. Pre-dating the Chicago Fire in 1871, the Academy Bell regularly called the Sisters of Mercy to prayer and teaching during Saint Xavier's early years as an Academy. There will be a ceremonial ringing of the bell in celebration of our newest students joining our community and the knowledge they will receive here. Families are then invited to bid farewell to their student as they prepare for the evening's activities. All new students are then invited join President Wiseman to pose at the Academy Bell for the official class picture.
