Graduate Admission

School of Education

Admission to any of the graduate programs within the School of Education requires the following:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or above in any major from an institution of higher education with regional accreditation.
  2. Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. If the undergraduate GPA is 2.99 or below, applicants may be considered for probationary admission.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from professionals who can address your strengths and limitations related to the program for which you are making application.*
  4. Applicants must pass a test of basic academic skills for regular admission to educator licensure programs. Accepted tests of basic skills include: the Test of Academic Proficiency, ACT (with writing) and a minimum score of 22, or SAT (with math and critical thinking) and a minimum score of 1030.
  5. A personal statement is required, addressing the rationale for pursuit of the program and assessment of strengths and limitations.
  6. With the exception of the Graduate Counseling program, students may attempt a maximum of six graduate credit hours prior to program admission.

*The Graduate Counseling program requires three letters of reference.
**The Teacher Leader Non-Endorsement program requires one letter of reference.

Teacher Preparation Programs

Early Childhood Education

Elementary Education

Program leads to...
Master's degree and licensure in elementary education.

Program Format
Evening cohort, on campus, one night/week in fall/spring, two nights/week in summer.

Program Length
Two and a half years for the complete program, 20 months for the certification/licensure.

Additional Courses
General education (core) undergraduate courses that can be taken while enrolled in the program may apply.

Secondary Education

Required UG Major or Equivalent
Major or equivalent of a major in a subject SXU is approved for in secondary education.

Program leads to...
Master's degree and licensure in appropriate secondary or K-12 teaching field.

Program Format
Evening cohort, on campus, one night/week in fall/spring, two nights/week in summer.

Program Length
Two and a half years for complete program, 20 months for licensure.

Additional Courses
Undergraduate coursework in a teaching subject area for secondary or K-12 education to meet national or state standards may apply.

Special Education

Required UG Major or Equivalent
No particular major required.

Program leads to...
Master's degree and licensure in special education, LBS I, K-12.

Program Format
Evening cohort, on campus, one night/week in fall/spring, two nights/week in summer.

Program Length
Two and a half years for complete program, 20 months for licensure.

Additional Courses
Three prerequisite courses that may also be taken as part of the program.

Specialist Preparation Programs

Educational Administration - Principal Preparation

Experience Requirement
Proof that the candidate is properly certified to teach in Illinois with a minimum of two years experience at the time of admission and four years by the time of the program completion. Substitute teaching does not count toward the experience.

GPA Requirements
2.5 GPA or higher.

Eligibility
Licensed teachers (teachers may still refer to themselves as certified) seeking to obtain principal or assistant principal credentials.

Program leads to...
Master's degree, Principal licensure.

Program Format
Evening program, on campus.

Program Length
21 months.

Reading Specialist

Experience Requirement
Must have minimum two years full-time teaching experience in an Illinois School as a certified teacher upon program completion.

Eligibility
Licensed teachers (teachers may still refer to themselves as certified) seeking to obtain reading specialist credentials and pursue positions as, but not limited to, reading specialists, literacy and instructional coaches, consultants or instructors.

Program leads to...
Master's degree and licensure as reading specialist.

Program Format
Cohort model, evening classes, on- and off-campus locations.

Program Length
Two years.

Endorsement Programs

ESL/Bilingual Teacher Endorsement

Basic Skills Assessment
None.

Eligibility
Teachers of preK-12 or individuals interested in gaining the skills to teach English to adults. Applicant seeking the State of Illinois Endorsement in Bilingual Education must pass a state language proficiency test in a second language.

18 graduate credit hours, Certificate of Advanced Studies or master's degree (not for licensure).

Program Format
Online, hybrid.

Program Length
One year.

Ed. Tech. Endorsement

Basic Skills Assessment
None.

Eligibility
Teachers or individuals interested in educational technology professions in K-12 schools, higher education or other organizations.

Program leads to...
Twenty-one graduate credit hours, Certificate of Advanced Studies, or master's degree; with at least 24 hours, students can apply for the Technology Specialist Endorsement upon passing a content test on an Illinois teaching license.

Program Format
Evening, hybrid.

Program Length
Two years.

Teacher Leader Endorsement

GPA Requirements
2.5 or higher GPA.

Letters of Recommendation
One from a supervisor and one from a peer teacher.

Experience Requirement
Three years teaching experience.

Basic Skills Assessment
None.

Eligibility
Must be a certified Illinois teacher to be eligible for Teacher Leader Endorsement.

Program leads to...
Master's degree in Teaching and Leadership with option of eligibility for Illinois Teacher Leadership Endorsement.

Program Format
Hybrid.

Program Length
Two years.

Teacher Leader Non-Endorsement

GPA Requirements
2.5 or higher GPA.

Letters of Recommendation
One letter of recommendation from a supervisor or peer teacher.

Experience Requirement
Currently holding a teaching position.

Eligibility
None.

Program leads to...
Master's degree in Teaching and Leadership.

Program Format
Hybrid.

Program Length
Two years.

Individualized Program - Reading

Basic Skills Assessment
If seeking Illinois Reading Teacher Endorsement, applicant must pass a test of basic skills required for educator licensure for full admission before the start of the second semester.

Eligibility
Individuals who want to become better teachers of reading or seek the Illinois Reading Teacher Endorsement. Non-certified teachers are eligible for this program.

Program leads to...
Master's degree and, if all requirements are met, Illinois Reading Teacher Endorsement. This program does not lead to a Reading Specialist license.

Online, hybrid, or face-to-face.

Two years.

Non-Licensure Graduate Programs

Curriculum and Instruction Program

Eligibility
Licensed teachers seeking to broaden their knowledge of theory and practice in education or individuals possessing a bachelor's degree in a major other than education working in a traditional school or educational environment.

I-STEM

Eligibility
Elementary education teachers interested in enhancing their knowledge and performance in the areas of the pedagogy and practices of Integrative Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education.

Eighteen graduate credit hours, Certificate of Advanced Studies, or master's degree (not for licensure).

Counselor Graduate Programs

Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling

Purpose Statement
Applicants are required to submit a statement regarding their interest in the counseling profession. Statements generally include information about personal and professional experiences that have shaped their interest in this profession as well as specific career goals and level of motivation to pursue full time graduate study.

Interview Requirements
An interview with a member of the program faculty will be arranged for applicants whose file indicates that minimum requirements for admission have been met.

Eligibility
Individuals with or without teaching or counseling experience seeking preparation to counsel in schools and in a variety of mental health settings may seek educator licensure in School Counseling and Professional Counseling licensure (LPC) in Illinois.

Program leads to...
Master's degree and eligibility to take the Licensed Professional Counselor Exam (LPC) and the Professional Educator Licensure in school counseling in Illinois.

Program Format
Evening cohort in Chicago.

Program Length
Three years.

Community Counseling
