Flu Prevention and Influenza Vaccine Information

The flu season is upon us again. The Health Center is offering the flu shot to all adults of the SXU community including employees, students and surrounding community members for $31. Unfortunately, the only supply that we have for children at this time is for those who are uninsured or on Medicaid or All Kids. We have a limited supply so we request that you make an appointment.

We recommend members of our community continue to actively seek out the influenza vaccine, as it is recommended for all people over the age of six months.

Flu shots are especially important for people at increased risk for complications from the flu:

  • Young children
  • Pregnant women
  • People age 65 and older
  • People with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease
  • Health care workers and everyone who lives with or cares for anyone at increased risk for flu complications, including infants younger than six months of age.
The following sites do have a supply of influenza vaccine for children:

In addition to vaccinations, CDPH officials recommend everyone can take simple steps to avoid the flu:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick with flu–like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them

Please continue to periodically check the Health Center web page for updates throughout the flu season.  If you have any questions, please direct them to the Health Center at 773-298-3712.
